Timing Matters Initiative
The Timing Matters initiative is a partnership between OMAFRA and agricultural sector organizations focused on raising awareness and understanding about the risks of spreading nutrients on frozen or snow-covered ground. The goal is to promote better manure management planning to achieve the right timing of manure application.
The Peer to Peer Response Team works with farmers to identify practical alternatives to spreading manure on frozen or snow-covered ground and remind producers of the risks of nutrient runoff when best practices are not followed. The team responds to complaints of winter spreading and contacts the farmers to reiterate the risks of nutrient runoff and inquire about what limitations or perceptions have led them to spread during these periods.
The project is a pilot for the winter of 2017-18 and 2018-19, focused on farms in the Lake Erie watershed.
